Did your SST card come from Redcode Inc.? The Buildings Department has cancelled every SST certificate issued by Redcode Inc. Affected workers have until December 7, 2026 to complete the training with a DOB-registered course provider (city notice).
Who needs an SST card?
Local Law 196 of 2017 requires it. Workers need one on job sites that must have a site safety plan and a construction superintendent, site safety coordinator or site safety manager. That includes workers, journeypersons and forepersons. Supervisors need a supervisor card.
How many hours?
- Worker: 40 hours.
- If you have 30-hour OSHA: add 8 hours of fall prevention and 2 of mental health awareness.
- If you have 10-hour OSHA: add 8 hours of fall prevention, 8 of site safety, 4 of supported scaffold use, 2 of mental health awareness and 8 hours of electives.
- Supervisor: 62 hours.
If you took 10-hour or 30-hour OSHA in the past 5 years, you may get a temporary card that lasts 6 months while you finish the rest.
How long does it last, and how do you renew it?
The card lasts 5 years. To renew, a worker takes 8 hours: 4 of fall prevention and 4 of supported scaffold use, or 4 of fall prevention, 2 of mental health awareness and 2 of tool box talks or pre-task meetings.
If your card expires on or after May 3, 2026, you have up to one year after it expires to renew. But during that year you can't use the expired card to work on a job site. After the year, you need a new card.
Where do you get it?
Only from a course provider registered with the Buildings Department. The city links to the list of providers from its SST card page. The city also offers free SST training through Small Business Services: call 888-SBS-4NYC or visit nyc.gov/SST.
Hurt even though you had your card?
Your card shows you were trained. It doesn't move the blame onto you. In New York, the owner and the company running the job are usually responsible for giving you a safe ladder, scaffold or harness. If you fell because that equipment was missing or failed, talk to a lawyer. See how it works.
